Pause, verify the request through an official channel and never act under pressure.

Banking & UPI FraudsLast reviewed: 8 September 2026

What is this fraud?

Card details are used without the cardholder's permission for purchases, transfers or recurring payments.

How does it happen?

Details may be stolen through phishing, fake support calls, compromised websites, malicious apps, data breaches or unsafe card handling.

Warning signs

Unknown transaction alerts; small test charges; OTPs for purchases not made by you; a caller asking for card number, CVV, PIN or OTP.

How to stay safe

Never share CVV, PIN or OTP. Use transaction limits and alerts, disable unused online/international transactions and use trusted payment pages.

If you are a victim

Block the card immediately, dispute the transaction with the issuer, call 1930, report online and retain statements and merchant descriptors.

Evidence to preserve

Keep transaction IDs or UTRs, bank messages, screenshots, chats, emails, phone numbers, profiles, URLs, app details, and the exact date and time. Preserve original files without editing or deleting them.

Official reporting
