Summary

Understand how credit cards work, including credit limit, billing cycle, due date, minimum due, fees, rewards, repayment, credit utilisation and safe usage.

1. What is a Credit Card?

A credit card is a revolving credit facility issued by a bank or eligible card issuer. An approved customer may use the card up to an assigned credit limit and repay according to the billing statement and payment terms.

The issuer decides eligibility, credit limit, fees, interest, rewards and approval after its own assessment. Hayanav provides only general information and application assistance; it does not issue cards or decide approval.

2. How does a Credit Card work?

  1. The issuer assigns a credit limit.
  2. The customer uses the card for eligible purchases or transactions.
  3. Transactions appear in the billing statement.
  4. The statement shows total amount due, minimum amount due, due date and applicable information.
  5. The customer repays according to the issuer’s terms.

3. Common reasons people use Credit Cards

  • Everyday purchases
  • Online payments
  • Travel-related spending
  • Fuel purchases

4. Benefits of Credit Cards

  • Convenient cashless payments and transaction records
  • Grace period according to issuer terms
  • Cashback, reward points, travel, fuel and lifestyle benefits
  • Promotional offers and emergency payment convenience
  • Potential contribution to credit history when used and repaid responsibly

Benefits, exclusions, reward expiry, minimum spends, redemption rules and fees differ by issuer and card variant.

5. Important Credit Card components

Credit Limit

Maximum outstanding amount permitted by the issuer.

Available Credit

Credit remaining after transactions, holds and repayments.

Billing Cycle

Period during which eligible transactions are recorded for a statement.

Total Amount Due

Total payable for the billing cycle, including applicable charges.

Minimum Amount Due

Minimum payment required by the due date. Paying only this may leave the balance subject to finance charges.

Grace Period

Interest-free period for eligible purchases when the complete statement amount is paid as required.

Cash Advance

Cash withdrawal that may attract separate fees and finance charges from the transaction date.

Credit Utilisation

Outstanding credit balance ÷ total credit limit × 100. High utilisation may affect the credit profile.

6. Fees and charges to check

  • Joining, annual or renewal fee
  • Finance and late-payment charges
  • Cash withdrawal and foreign-currency charges
  • Balance-transfer and EMI-conversion charges
  • Reward redemption, replacement-card, statement and service charges
  • Over-limit charges and taxes

Always verify the current official schedule of charges. Fixed amounts are not published here because they vary by issuer and card variant.

7. Rewards and cashback

Reward points, cashback, travel, fuel benefits and merchant offers may have exclusions, minimum spends, caps, expiry rules, redemption conditions and fees. Read the official card terms before relying on any benefit.

8. Eligibility factors

  • Age, income and employment or business profile
  • Employer or profession category and serviceable location
  • Credit history and score
  • Existing credit-card and loan obligations
  • Recent credit enquiries, internal issuer policy and verification results

General eligibility factors do not guarantee approval.

9. Documents generally required

  • PAN and accepted identity/address proof
  • Salary slips, Form 16 or ITR, where requested
  • Bank statements and employment proof
  • Business or professional proof for self-employed applicants
  • GST or financial records, where applicable
  • Additional documents requested by the card issuer

Documents differ by issuer and profile. Submit them only through a verified process.

10. Credit Card and credit score

A credit card may affect the credit profile depending on how it is used and repaid. Pay dues on time, keep utilisation manageable, avoid unnecessary repeated applications, review statements and correct genuine reporting errors.

Delayed payments, persistent high utilisation, repeated applications, overdue balances and settled or written-off accounts may negatively affect the profile.

A credit score does not guarantee a card, credit limit or loan approval.

11. EMI conversion and balance transfer

EMI conversion may allow eligible transactions or outstanding amounts to be repaid in instalments. Compare principal, rate, processing fee, taxes, instalments, total repayment, effect on available credit and pre-closure conditions. Balance-transfer offers also require a total-cost comparison.

12. Safe Credit Card usage

Never share OTP, PIN, CVV, full card number, internet-banking password, UPI PIN or card-control login details.

  • Use official issuer applications and websites.
  • Enable transaction alerts and lock a lost card immediately.
  • Review statements and avoid suspicious links or remote-access apps.
  • Report unauthorised transactions through the issuer’s official channel.
  • For cyber financial fraud in India, call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in.
