Pause, verify the request through an official channel and never act under pressure.

Shopping & Social Media FraudsLast reviewed: 8 September 2026

What is this fraud?

A criminal registers or links the victim's WhatsApp account/device and impersonates the victim.

How does it happen?

The attacker obtains the six-digit registration code, tricks the user into scanning a device-link QR code or gains SIM/account access.

Warning signs

Registration code you did not request; unexpected logout; unfamiliar linked device; contacts receiving requests from you; demand to share a six-digit code.

How to stay safe

Enable two-step verification, never share registration codes, review linked devices and use device lock/biometric protection.

If you are a victim

Re-register your number in the official app, remove unknown linked devices, contact WhatsApp support, warn contacts and report any financial loss immediately.

Evidence to preserve

Keep transaction IDs or UTRs, bank messages, screenshots, chats, emails, phone numbers, profiles, URLs, app details, and the exact date and time. Preserve original files without editing or deleting them.
