CYBER SAFETY GUIDE

UPI Fraud

Never approve an unknown collect request or enter your UPI PIN to receive money.

Banking & UPI FraudsLast reviewed: 8 September 2026

What is this fraud?

Criminals deceive or manipulate a person into authorising a UPI payment or take control of the person's UPI-linked account.

How does it happen?

They may send a collect request, fake refund message, payment link, QR code or ask the victim to enter a UPI PIN on the false promise of receiving money.

Warning signs

Requests to enter a UPI PIN to receive money; unknown collect requests; urgency; claims of cashback, refund or account blocking.

How to stay safe

A UPI PIN is used to authorise a payment, not to receive money. Read the payee name and amount before approving. Never share OTP, PIN or screen access.

If you are a victim

Contact the bank/UPI app immediately, call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in. Preserve the UTR, screenshots, phone number, chat and transaction details.

Evidence to preserve

Keep transaction IDs or UTRs, bank messages, screenshots, chats, emails, phone numbers, profiles, URLs, app details, and the exact date and time. Preserve original files without editing or deleting them.

Official reporting

For financial cyber fraud, call 1930 immediately, notify your bank or payment provider, and file a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal ↗. General technical advisories are available from CERT-In ↗.
